With Eddie Hearn recently claiming to Boxing News
that heavyweight sensation, Anthony Joshua’s next fight could be against IBF
champion, Charles Martin on April 9th, the 2012 Olympic Gold
medallist could be having his first shot at a world title after just 16 fights.
Anthony ‘AJ’ Joshua is a man that needs no
introduction. The fighter from Watford has become a massive name within boxing
during his short three year career spanning 15 fights and 15 KO’s. He looks set
to take another step-up if the fight with Charles Martin is made, as Eddie
Hearn claims it will, within the next 48 hours.
This is a fight that Joshua will be licking his lips
at. The relatively unknown Charles Martin won the IBF title back in January
after his opponent, Vyacheslav Glazkov, twisted his knee in the third round and
the PBC fighter should be easy pickings for the fast improving Joshua.
However it will be very surprising if Al Haymon
allows Martin to step in the ring with Joshua. Many were thinking that a
unification fight between Wilder and Martin looked set to be on the cards as a
fight with Joshua would be extremely high risk for the 21-0 fighter. The IBF is
a perfect route for Joshua as well as there are not many dangerous fighters who
are ranked with that division.
The one that stands out is New Zealander, Joseph
Parker, who is ranked no.6 by the IBF and the 24 year old has the potential to
make massive in roads in the heavyweight division in 2016. A fight between the
two looks set to be in the making at some point either this year or next year
and it should be a cracker.
If the fight does not get made, there are a number
of other good options that Joshua has, Eddie Hearn recently stated there were
around five potential fights that he could be in. Gate-keepers such as Bermane
Stiverne, Bryant Jennings or Johan Duhaupas would all be good tests for Joshua
to see where he really is.
Joshua fans will be begging for Hearn to make the
fight with Charles Martin and bring the belt back to Britain. Then the fight
that all UK fans will want to see is a domestic bust-up with David Haye. The
two look as though they are on a collision course and the fight has the
potential to be absolutely massive. However for now, with the potential of the
Martin fight being announced in the next two days and Joshua boxing the way he
has been, the future looks very bright for the 26 year old.
