Sam Eggington vs Bradley Skeete: A Preview

On Saturday, ‘The Savage’ Sam Eggington will defend his Commonwealth and British welterweight titles against Bradley ‘Super’ Skeete in Birmingham live on Sky Sports. The contrasting styles of the two fighters should make this a fascinating domestic fight that all boxing fans should be tuning in to watch.

Bookies slight favourite, Egginton has already tasted defeat twice in his short career. However the 22 year old has come on leaps and bounds since his last defeat at the hands of Johnny Coyle back in 2014 and will be looking to break onto the world stage in the near future. This is certainly Eggington’s toughest fight yet even though he claims it won’t be come fight night.

Skeete’s only defeat came at the hands of Frankie Gavin who, himself, challenged Kell Brook for a world title back in 2015. The Matchroom vs BoxNation sub-plot in this fight is an interesting one with Skeete being sent over by Frank Warren to fight on Sky Sports. There are certainly question marks about why Warren would do this. If he saw any potential in his fighter, Skeete, then surely he would want to keep him fighting on cards on BoxNation?

Whether these two fighters will be able to have a major impact on world level remains to be seen. There is no doubt that this is a massive chance for both fighters to showcase themselves on a big stage. This is the classic case of boxer vs brawler. Eggington will be looking to take the fight to Skeete and it is whether Skeete can keep Eggington on the end of his jab and out of range which will determine whether he wins the fight or not.

I will always favour the boxer over the brawler and in this case it is no different. The only worry for Skeete is whether Eggington will just walk through his shots with Skeete not being the most powerful of welterweights however in my opinion Skeete will have enough to out-box Eggington.

Prediction: Skeete on points
