Errol Spence vs Chris Algieri: A Preview

This Saturday, Errol ‘the Truth’ Spence faces his toughest test yet when he takes on former WBO light-welterweight champion, Chris Algieri at the Barclays Centre in New York. This is yet another card that the PBC will be broadcasting live on network television and this time it has the potential to be a very good night of boxing.

Former Olympian, Errol Spence, has had an immaculate career so far winning all 19 of his fights so far and looking unbelievable in all of them. His ring IQ, hand-speed, variety of punches and power make him one of the hottest prospects in world boxing. Many predict him to be on top of the welterweight division in the next few years and he will be viewing ‘gatekeeper’, Algieri as just another stepping stone on his way to the top.

There is no doubt that the flashy southpaw passes the ‘eye-test’ and has the potential to do great things in the sport. However, ‘potential’ is the key word in that sentence as he is yet to face anyone of any real calibre as so far all his fights have been easy touches.

Chris Algieri is a big step-up for Spence as he has not fought anyone of anywhere near the level of fighter as Algieri. He has been in the ring with the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Ruslan Provodnikov and almost had Amir Khan’s career in ruins after he caught the Brit with some heavy shots in the early rounds. Algieri is yet to be stopped in his 23 fight career and has shown a lot of heart throughout his career.

Having said that, he is of little danger to Spence’s untested chin as he has very limited punching power and there is no knowing which Algieri will turn up in the ring come Saturday night. He looked poor against Eric Bone in his last fight out and if Spence is the real deal he should pick Algieri apart and win a comfortable unanimous decision or even, do what the likes of the aforementioned fighters couldn’t, and stop him.

On the under-card, is WBO champion Krzysztof Glowacki, who is fighting shot American, Steve Cunningham. The former cruiserweight champion has been fluctuating between heavyweight and cruiserweight for a while and Glowacki, who stopped Marco Huck in emphatic fashion, should prove too much for him.

Prediction:

Spence KO

Glowacki KO
