Danny Garcia vs Robert Guerrero: A Preview

Tomorrow night, on the 23rd June, Danny 'Swift' Garcia and Robert 'the Ghost' Guerrero will face off at the Staples Center in Los Angeles for the vacant WBC world welterweight title. This is a huge fight for both fighters for very different reasons. Garcia is looking to officially announce himself on the welterweight stage whilst Guerrero is looking to become a three weight world champion whilst at the same time seeking a comeback to that world class level after losing to both Keith Thurman and Floyd Mayweather in recent times.

If truth be told, Danny Garcia had a disappointing year in 2015. After winning in a controversial majority decision against Lamont Peterson, he then defeated a past his best Paulie Malignaggi, both of whom are also Al Haymon's fighters. Garcia, at 27, has already cleaned up the light-welterweight division with wins against Erik Morales, Amir Khan, Zab Juday, Lucas Matthysse, all world class opposition. However there is still a question mark about whether his power and speed will stay with him at the 147 weight limit when he starts mixing it with the very best.

Robert Guerrero is now viewed as a gate-keeper by many in the boxing world. He has been in some unbelievably grueling fights in recent times such as against Keith Thurman and Andre Berto and he is definitely a former shadow with himself. He escaped with a split decision against fringe contender Aaron Martinez and even had to pick himself up off the canvas so with a lot of mileage on the clock already in his career he will be exposed by the fighter from Philadelphia.

One side point is that this fight should not be for a world title. However it is another Al Haymon masterstroke which he seems to have been able to do time and again for his fighters. The fact is Robert Guerrero has not earnt himself a title shot but the WBC seem to be in Haymon's pocket at the moment.

There is no doubt that Danny Garcia is an unbelievably talented fighter, however if he is to succeed at welterweight he needs to start mixing it with the best in the division. Since his move up in weight he has been 'cherry picking' opponents and Robert Guerrero is another one of those fighters. Garcia is simply too much for Guerrero; he will control the pace of this fight behind his stiff jab and when he brings his devastating left hook into play it will be lights out Guerrero.
